The reasons why I believe in Bible and the reasons why I don't?

I'm 17
Sad Agnostic -> Happy Born Again Christian -> Don't Know

Why I DO:

Takes away all my worries and gives me self esteem and confidence that everything is going to be great. Eternity in Heaven and security, morals, respect for everyone and everything.

Why I DO NOT:

It sounds like a poorly written fairytale, something similar to the universe that I wished for when I was afraid of losing a loved one.
WHY the hell does hell exist, WHY does devil exist? WHY is it all about HIM? If somebody doesn't believe him he sends them to hell? that's selfish, isn't it? and sometimes everything sounds so stupid

What's your take?

Any confidence the Bible gives you is because your religious leaders have cherry picked the parts they've taught you and ratationalized away the rest, or ignored it. That way they can give you nice little pat answers to everything to make you feel good. Your "Why I DO" points highlight the fact that religion just plays on your emotions, taking advantage of natural human insecurities. However, it is a false comfort.

Religion is superstition. Gods don't really exist, and neither do devils, angels, souls, spirits, ghosts or any of that other nonsense.

As for morality, if you read the Bible honestly, you'll realize that its morality is a very primitive one that isn't all that great. Sure, there are some gems there. However, stories like the one about 40 kids being torn apart for calling someone "baldy" highlight its faults. If you want your morality spoonfed to you, then just go to church and listen to your preacher tell you want you should think is good and bad. Though, you should realize that what he tells you is much different than earlier preachers taught or what the Bible promoted. It's a cherry picked morality that changes with society, though it lags by a few years to a few centuries.

Instead, realize that morality isn't a list of 10 rules. It's something that you have to really think about and develop to suit your own life. Instead of just blindly applying a rule your pastor fed you, try thinking about the situation and coming up with the pros and cons of both sides. "God said so" isn't a good basis for morality, especially since the guy, if he exists, hasn't shown up in the last 2000 years to correct the guys claiming to speak for him.

As for respect for others, that's easier with atheism. When you realize that were all on this planet together, struggling to make the best of the one life we have, you tend to value it more. You're not wasting this life planning for the next, as if people's lives here are disposible. And you're not doing good for other people just because you think it will please some god. You're doing it because you believe it is the right thing to do, because you really value those around you, and becauses you feel true empathy towards them. Religion, if anything, tends to breed intolerance. Even the religions that claim tolerance tend to only do so up to the point that conversion seems unlikely. Then "love thy enemy" turns into "an eye for an eye", "don't throw pearls before swine", and "don't be unequally yoked".
