Baby Bedding
A new arrival can cost a fortune but it’s all worth it in the end. Baby clothes and toys are a joy to buy but it doesn’t end there… there is still the baby bedding to purchase as well!

Baby Bedding
Many parents head for the fashionable baby sleeping bags for their newborn however cotton bedding is the sensible route to take at first. Cotton sheets and cellular blankets made of cotton are easily layered to keep your baby covered at the required temperature.
Pram sized blankets and sheets can be purchased for Moses basket or carrycot styled beds and you will need (to get started) about 4 sheets and 2-3 blankets. Soft sheets made of flannelette are recommended for new babies.
It is recommended also that acrylic cellular blankets are used instead of cotton ones should the baby’s bedroom be a cold one.
While purchasing baby bedding you may want to consider baby sleeping bags. They advantage of them is that they cannot be kicked off as easily as sheets and so less likely to wake up chilly and wake you up too. Newborn baby sleeping bags are available in the shops however it might be a good idea to use conventional sheets and blankets for the first few months. When you do purchase a sleeping bag for your baby it is recommended by the Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths that you get one without a hood. Ensure the neck is the right size for the baby just in case he or she should slip inside the bag. Additionally, to avoid your baby getting too hot, never place duvets or quilts over the sleeping bag.
If a sleeping bag is the way you want to go, ensure that you purchase one that suits the season such as a low tog (0.5 to 1 tog) during the summer and a 2.5 tog in the winter. Don’t be tempted to purchase a sleeping bag with a higher tog for it is generally felt that the baby will be far too hot. Overall, the pluses of a sleeping bag include that the baby will be a constant temperature as there are no covers to throw aside, that the sleeping bag can be used wherever you are (whether visiting or on holiday) and will encourage sleep because the baby will recognise it.
Bear in mind when purchasing baby bedding that is a sleeping bag, that when the baby gets older he or she could find it somewhat restricting and not so comfortable.
Lastly, when purchasing baby bedding never buy a duvet or pillows for your baby until he or she is at least a year old because they restrict movement and can add excessive heat in the bed.
